#1- RED VELVET - IRENE & SEULGI - MONSTER
Following a 3 week delay, the first sub-unit from Red Velvet, consisting of Irene & Seulgi has finally debuted and it's nothing like what you'd have expected! "Monster, with a flashy music video, great choreography and an amazing song to support all of that, what more could you ask for? The song is dark but still retains some flairs of other Red Velvet songs and has a hook that'll probably get ingrained in your head. They also manage to properly integrate dubstep elements into the song. Have you checked out this music video where they seem to be very good friends?

#2- CHUNGHA - PLAY
Chungha is back after less 3 months since the release of ''Stay Tonight'', and she just never disappoints! ''Play'' is a Latin, tropical dance song and it really allows her to flex her dancing and vocals. The instrumental is upbeat while the song itself is really catchy, making this a perfect summer track. Despite this being just a pre-release for her upcoming first full-length album, you can really tell that MNH Entertainment is not messing around by compromising on the music video since it has everything you'd expect from a promotional track. This makes me even more excited for the album!

#3- SF9 - SUMMER BREEZE
Capitalizing on the hype they've been getting over the last few months, SF9 has made a comeback with their 9th mini-album ''9loruUS'' and the title track ''Summer Breeze''. Don't let the title fool you though, as this definitely isn't as bright as you'd imagine it to be. The wild west vibes with the guitar instrumental work really well here, and the hook is incredibly catchy. The music video is also really well shot, and the storyline having two scenarios is pretty cool. To top it all off, the wardrobe choices were flawless, particularly in the darker concept, and the choreography looks really fun.

#4- (G)I-DLE - I'M THE TREND
(G)I-DLE released a new digital single specifically for their fans, and the music video can't get more adorable and wholesome than this. "I'm The Trend" is really catchy and has some great jazz vibes to it which doesn't come as much as a surprise considering Minnie and Yuqi composed it. The homage paid to their previous title tracks in the chorus of this song was a 200 IQ idea!

#5- CHEN LINONG - UNMASK
Chen Linong is back with another great single, "Unmask", from his 2020 album, "Out Of Place". It is a soft tempo song where the singer expresses his innermost feelings to the world. The music video tells us the story of a Chen Linong who has feelings for his best friend who is often mistreated by the person she is dating as he tries his best to comfort her and confess his feelings towards her, only to be brushed off as she only sees him as a friend. The song itself is not as overtly emotional as his previous release "Lost In You", but acts as a sweet and heartfelt love confession behind close doors that he will never have the guts to say out loud to the subject of the song. Chen Linong gives us another great emotional release and we can't wait to see just what happens next!

#6- HEBE TIEN - ONE AFTER ANOTHER
Hebe Tien is back to give us a great new release in the form of "One After Another", a dreamlike and emotional song about saying goodbye and letting go. Along with a fantastic music video to accompany it that makes us think about the harder things in life and that we should be helping to comfort those around us that might fell down on their luck. Overall, it's a great release from an even greater soloist!

#7- YONEZU KENSHI - KANDEN
Yonezu Kenshi will give you an electric shock once you learn that he's not just back with "Kanden" off his 5th album 「STRAY SHEEP」— which also acts as the theme for the Japanese drama, "MIU404" — but that he also crossed a YouTube subscriber milestone for Japanese artists! The song is an upbeat funk-influenced track making use of animal influenced instrumentals — "nya nya nya" (cat) & "wa wa wa" (dog) — while at the same time he tells the audience that he just wants to live like lightning — hence the name Kanden (Electric Shock) — while at the same time giving us a stunning performance through a trippy music video situated in a parking garage.

#8- EXO-SC - TELEPHONE (Feat. 10cm)
Prior to their comeback on 13th July, EXO-SC dropped a surprise pre-release single ''Telephone'' which is a b-side on their upcoming full album. he song has a chill, easy to listen to vibe which makes it such a relaxing experience. It's great how Sehun gets a chance to shine in this sub-unit since he often gets the least number of lines in the full group's songs, and it's quite evident that even though he has been pushed as a rapper, his vocals are clearly improving, which is always great to see! Chanyeol is another one who often gets overlooked as a vocalist because of how he has the image of being a rapper in EXO. The music video for this is so cute and playful and definitely keeps your attention the whole way through. Look forward to their main comeback next week!

#1- BLACKPINK just isn't slowing down in the record-breaking department! ''How You Like That'' was recently certified Diamond on QQ Music and is now the best selling single by a foreign female act in China. The single then went on to get over 50 million points on the Gaon Digital Chart for the past week, making it the song with the highest digital index for a group in 2020. Upon getting #1 on the Digital, Downloads and Streaming charts, it is also the first song by a girl group to achieve the triple crown since 2018. The music videos for ''Kill This Love'' and ''Boombayah'' recently surpassed the 900M views mark on YouTube. It's only a matter of time until both videos surpass 1 billion views!

#2- IZ*ONE's ''Oneiric Diary''
has debuted at #1 on the Global Album Chart. The album has also been officially certified by Hanteo following its recent achievement of gaining the highest 1st-week sales for a girl group album. ''Oneiric Diary'', amongst all its achievements, is now the group's first album to surpass the 500,000 sales mark.

#3- Following their long-awaited debut, Irene & Seulgi managed to sell 87.9k+ copies with their unit mini-album ''Monster'' within the first day, which also means that it now holds the record for highest first-week sales for a Red Velvet album! The album's eponymous title track also saw instant success,
debuting within the top 10 of three major charts in South Korea, while the b-sides also debuted within the top 100. The music video, despite its release being delayed by 18 hours, still managed to live up to the hype and achieved 11.4 million views in 24 hours on YouTube. Congratulations on a successful debut!

#4- Weeekly has also seen instant success following their debut! The music video for title track ''Tag Me'' has already hit
10 million views on YouTube while their debut mini-album ''We are'' has surpassed 10k sales. We're all excited to see them achieve even more success!

#5- Kenshi Yonezu has become the first Japanese artist to achieve the
5 million subscriber milestone on YouTube! Congratulations to him!

#6- Xiao Zhan has made it into the record books as his latest single ''Light'' scored a Guinness World Record for
Fastest-Selling Digital Track in China! Congratulations on the massive achievement!

#7- With just their pre-debut music video, NiziU has managed to surpass all expectations as ''Make you happy'' has achieved over
40 million views in just 9 days! We're all anticipating their debut later this year!

#8- It was recently revealed by Nielsen Music that BTS' latest album, ''Map of the Soul: 7'' sold 552,000 copies (96% of which were physical albums) in the USA during the first half of the year. Which subsequently made it the best selling album of the year so far in the USA! Nothing too surprising from the group!

#9- TWICE just continue to show why they're unlike any girl group we've seen before. Following the release of their latest Japanese single ''Fanfare'', the group has now surpassed the 9 million shipments mark; 5.26 million from Korean releases and 3.82 million from Japanese releases.

I'd like to point out though, One After Another is not at all about saying goodby and letting go. I understand it's a difficult song to describe, and I can see where you'd find that understanding from.

One after another was actually writting in exploration of the theme of blindly following popular opinions. One After Another can be understood as, one after another experience of trying to chase a common idea and common event we slowly lose ourselves. So this song says, stop pretending, time's running out, let's go back to the very beginning and find ourselves, and if we're lucky enough, let's use our ability to love - even if a thousand people go against me, they shan't bend my will. There's no turning back time, there's only the scenery i've left behind. I will keep moving forward no matter what.

A summary of the various ideas in this song is: like the mobius strip, no matter how the world turns, and for how long it turns, we will meet again. A lot of times it may look like as if we are on two opposing poles, but in actual fact we are connected as one whole. Just as happiness is not forever, disappointment need not necessarily be followed by despair. Once we have moved on from our slumps, it will be another new beginning. Once you have returned to the beginning, you begin from the first step; one, and then one experience after another, one by one you gain experience and understanding.

I translated it here:
Goodbye
People who steal trust aren't actually bad
Goodbye
Those who are loved and yet have their back turned against love
Come back

From petty tricks, we
From major principles, we first came out
We took the honest
We took the genius
and worshipped them one after another

One after another

We took the petty tricks
We took the great principles
and released them first

We took the found
We took the discarded
And loved them one by one

One after one, we doted on them

We took the petty tricks
We took the great principles
and released them first

We took the found
We took the discarded
And loved them one after another

One after another, we doted on them

Goodbye
people who show off
Who favours them?
Oh bye
if what (we've) done wrong
(we) could do over

From the honest, we
from the genius, we
first came out

We took the petty tricks
we took the great principles
And one by one used them until they broke

One after another

I do have a suggestion for icymi and SNS in general - I'd love to see better descriptions of songs. I feel that research into the songs is very cursory in general, and I think I would prefer no descriptions over shallow or misleading descriptions, to be honest. I understand it can be hard to find out more about songs in other languages, perhaps those could be accompanied by descriptions of the singers instead. Or, you could also ask the fans who posted about them in the first place - i'm sure most of us on this forum who like to share music from our favs are also willing to share about them and the song's meaning.

Another eg of this is Monster. What does the description really tell us about monster as a subunit debut song, and the theme they've been going for with this album, and what are the points that set it apart from other releases this month? These would make me actually want to catch up on the week's releases instead of the descriptions of the melody - those can be saved for reviews, for instance. Knowing the genre would be sufficient song-wise. Or where there isn't much going on lyrics-wise, descriptions could just be about the highlights of the songs/MVs - points of interest, what made them fresh to listen to.

Not saying it was intentional, buti think it’s a bt disingenuous to only say Twice have sold 9M total shipments, when the total tracked shipments only match up to about 8.1-8.2M. Not saying it was on putpose but i think it would be more truthful to mention, if possible

Also, irene & seulgi’s unit isnt just about “being good friends”, there’s a story there. The song is actually talking about and displaying a monster that lives inside of you. Irene and Seulgi are one person with two shadows. An explanation i give in the spoiler says everything in short

Thank you for the input. I do agree with your suggestion of getting more users involved in the descriptions of their favourite songs and we'll be working on ways to try and get more input from the fans of the various artists being featured each week.

Regarding this, I believe it was reported by outlets in S.Korea that TWICE passed 9 million since they probably counted Billboard's shipment numbers instead of Oricon which only counts sales in Japan and generally doesn't include bulk orders.

Also, irene & seulgi’s unit isnt just about “being good friends”, there’s a story there. The song is actually talking about and displaying a monster that lives inside of you. Irene and Seulgi are one person with two shadows. An explanation i give in the spoiler says everything in short

On the ''good friends'' part, I included that because that's how I've seen many fans joking about it on different platforms but in hindsight, I realise it was distasteful and I sincerely apologise for that. I'll be sure to do further research when working on descriptions in future.

Or where there isn't much going on lyrics-wise, descriptions could just be about the highlights of the songs/MVs - points of interest, what made them fresh to listen to.

ok, to update. We have taken your suggestion into account and have just redesigned our general releases format to allow more creativity and descriptiveness which will be implemented from the next upcoming ICYMI. If you, (or any other people) have any more questions or suggestions re: ICYMI or anything related to Press & SNS feel free to visit us in this thread:

Thanks for taking my suggestion into account. I don't exactly know what you mean, to be honest, because I was most concerned about accuracy and substance. For instance, the flippancy of the description of Hebe's One After Another was frustrating because her albums are thematic and her songs are basically messages, a musical diary. For this era, One After Another is the key focus, and dumbing it down to a song about goodbyes takes away from this. Combined with the description of the MV, it really just made it obvious that no research was done. I understand Hebe's songs are hard to research, even more so when you don't speak Chinese. The descriptiveness was only a problem because it was nonsensical. If there was no description, or a simple caption on the upcoming album/singer, I really wouldn't have commented further because I do get that her content is not as readily available as kpop. But I have an issue with presenting the one English word in the song as the theme of the song without checking to see if that's accurate.

For the rest, I think the problem is also the same - lack of research, leading to nothing particularly interesting being said. It might as well be a chart of releases. That is why I raised Monster as a further example. Thematically, and visually, there is a lot going on but instead the description greatly reduces it to one completely random and irrelevant point of note, the last line. There might have been a whole paragraph, but it really was just fluff. I don't actually need you to research and whatnot, everyone's busy - but if you can't, then really what's the point of writing anything at all? Just post it without a description if need be.

As for creativity being limited because of the current format, I didn't see that being the case because of the Chen Linong description and how it didn't read like the rest but I guess that's more evident from your bts perspective. I'm looking forward to the next ICYMI, anyhow!

I think re: The Hebe Tien issue there were two main problems. The first was the lack of translations, which has people relying on google translate - which a lot of the time does not provide a clear message. The second largely reducing it to something more trivial than it is (due to, in large part, the translations problem). I'll keep the thematic descriptions in mind should another of her songs be featured in the future, though the 1st point can't be easily fixed tbh

I also agree with the second section re: Red Velvet. The team has taken the suggestions (and criticisms) to mind and we have basically decided to reduce the amount of fluff and focus on releases with a wider view (e.g. is it thematically consistent with the artists wider discography for instance)
I can't give you the exact details bc it's bts press rules and guidelines.
Essentially, expect releases to look slightly more detailed in the coming weeks and months to come. 😁

Anyway, I really appreciate your advice and suggestions and it has actually helped in improving and self-reflecting on certain aspects of the format of this series of articles and as I stated in a previous reply. Feel free to reach out to me in the appropriate threads if you have any more suggestions or opinions.
