SCANDAL celebrates 15th anniversary at Osaka-Jo Hall, showing off both new and old songs
SCANDAL held their solo concert "SCANDAL 15th ANNIVERSARY LIVE『INVITATION』 at Osaka-Jo Hall" in commemoration of their 15th anniversary on August 21st at Osaka-Jo Hall.
SCANDAL formed in 2006 with HARUNA, MAMI, TOMOMI, and RINA, and made their major debut in 2008 with the single DOLL. Since then, they have gained many fans in Japan as well as overseas, and successfully held their first solo world tour in 2015 with 41 performances in 9 countries. They established their own imprint record label "her" in 2018.
On August 21, 2021, they celebrated their 15th anniversary. Osaka-Jo Hall is a place that holds many memories for these ladies who used to perform street lives on Shiroten Street inside of Osaka Castle Park when they first started out. Tickets for their first performance at Osaka-Jo Hall in 7 years and their third time performing there overall were sold out - In response to that, the concert was also live streamed to a total of 53 countries worldwide.
While the opening video containing arrangements of SCANDAL's songs played in the venue, those in the audience began to stand up from their seats one after another and directed their clapping full of expectations to the stage. When the four band members appeared on the fantastically colored smoke-filled stage where a video was playing on a huge vertical screen, the screen showed four lights gathering into one and blooming into rainbow-colored flowers. The video was made by NAKED, INC., the creative video company that SCANDAL had also collaborated with for a performance at the end of 2020.
As a blue butterfly perched on a flower on the screen, the PIXMOB LED bands on the wrists of the audience members began to glow the same color as the butterfly. The first song SCANDAL chose for this concert was "eternal." This song, released in March 2021, was created with the image of them singing it at this performance at Osaka-Jo Hall, and is filled with a suppleness and strength. The lyrics "Let's go now" sung by HARUNA were also suitable for the opening, and the arena was filled with their beautiful chorus.
The second song, "Kinenbi" (Anniversary), was a perfect song for this concert on the day of their 15th anniversary. The band's smiling faces were projected on the huge screen as the light beats spun by RINA and TOMOMI, and the sweet-and-sour guitar sound of MAMI's upped the excitement of the venue.
Following that was their popular song "SCANDAL BABY" that ranked #1 in their song popularity poll. The usual sight of TOMOMI and MAMI snuggling up to HARUNA during the second second verse also excited the audience.
HARUNA welcomed those in the audience and those watching the livestream by saying, "Again, welcome to 『INVITATION』!" - Watching the spectators enter the arena at intervals for infectious disease control had made them misty-eyed.
Next, she talked about their 15th anniversary performance at Osaka-Jo Hall, how they had been planning for many years for it, the joy of being able to hold the concert, and words of gratitude for their fans: "Considering the state the world has been in for about a year, many difficult things have happened for both you guys and us. But since the only thing we definitely wanted to do was to hold a concert together with everyone at Osaka-Jo Hall for our 15th anniversary, we were very scared that things would get worse. It makes us so happy simply due to the fact that so many people gathered here today despite all of the uncertainties. Everyone here who decided to celebrate our 15th anniversary with us and have fun at a concert, we plan to definitely make you guys happy. So, leave everything to us today. Please entrust yourselves to us and enjoy yourselves to the max."
Following their MC where they expressed their determination, they resumed the concert by playing their killer tune "Shunkan Sentimental." HARUNA then took off her guitar, grabbed a mic, and went, "Osaka, let's keep going!" and sang the audience-stirring, solid rock tune "Saishuuheiki, Kimi." The powerful beats of RINA, the edgy guitar sound of MAMI, the robust bassline of TOMOMI with a smile on her face, and the energetic and piercing vocals of HARUNA echoed throughout the venue.
It was immediately followed up with "Ceramic Blue," where the rock-solid band ensemble raised the heat of the venue. Next was their song "Departure" that demonstrates the soft and delicate side of SCANDAL's band sound, and where TOMOMI's sweet vocals shine. The light pink glow from the audience's PIXMOBs reminded one of the cherry blossoms in Osaka Castle Park.
As it was RINA's birthday on the day of the concert, HARUNA said, "Let's have the birthday girl say a few words." RINA reminded fans of her birthday and SCANDAL's formation date, saying, "I, RINA from SCANDAL, have turned 30. There have been many days when the band's formation date and my birthday have happened to be celebrated together at a concert, and I can't believe I've now been in the band for half of my life."
The band's growth was likened to the age of a person with comments such as, "We've been together for 15 years - That's so long," "15 years old... That'd be a middle schooler, right?", "It's adolescence." After that, HARUNA talked about the current state of the band, which has matured over 15 years, and said, "It feels like we're finally awake. We've put out a lot of songs, but we feel like we've finally found something that feels like ourselves, or something that feels comfortable to us. We've been doing this for 15 years, and it's because we've continued doing this that we're happy with who we are now."
When HARUNA said that they were celebrating their 15th anniversary and entering their 16th year, she joked, "We want to keep going - Actually, we don't know how to quit," MAMI and TOMOMI laughed and respectively said, "We don't need to think about that" - "We've never thought about quitting." Hearing those two remarks, HARUNA smiled and said, "We'll probably keep going forever. I'm happy we can still talk about things like this in our 30s." RINA also said, "I'm so glad to have these members."
After that, SCANDAL unveiled their new song "Ao no Naru Yoru no Sukima de" (In the Gaps of the Echoing Blue Night, written by RINA during the pandemic. With their eyes fixed on the stage, the audience listened to this song with a rhythm and guitars that resonate deeply, and that features impressive singing that makes you feel HARUNA's sadness.
For their new song "Ivory" with lyrics and music written by MAMI that was recently released in June, the voices of MAMI, HARUNA, and TOMOMI are set to RINA's heavy beat and create a beautiful harmony akin to sheer pieces of cloth lying on top of one another.
With "Koe," which also features main vocals from MAMI, her light blue Les Paul guitar echoed as she stepped on her effects board, while the audience's clapping echoed throughout the venue.
For "Tonight," which features programmed sounds, the vertical LED screen became horizontal, and video graphics featuring the lyrics directed the stage. The danceable beats and powerful performances made the audience dance.
With a smile on her face, HARUNA said, "This is so much fun! We really do love concerts! Truly! We're able to play concerts again thanks to everyone following the rules and preventative measures, and it feels like we're kicking off to a new start again. I'm glad we got to see everyone during this milestone year."
When it was revealed that comments from the livestream viewers were being received one after another on the monitor in front of them, the comments flowing at high speed were also projected on the LED screen. After touching briefly on the comments, the quartet started off the endgame with a performance of "Kagerou."
Following "A.M.D.K.J.", which ranked #3 in the song poll, was "Take Me Out." The audience went wild seeing the band swing their hair around while performing enthusiastically and hitting each note. During the interlude, each of their playing exploded as RINA headed it with her chaotic drumming. Feeling the audience's excitement of hitting the climax of the song without vocalizing became one of the concert's highlights.
After delivering "Awanai Tsumori no, Genki de ne" with plenty of exhilaration, the quartet enchanted the audience with a skilled performance of "Image." As the members went back and forth on the stage while looking at each other and playing happily, HARUNA shouted, "Osakaー!" with joy at the end.
When the audience loudly applauded their enthusiastic performance, the band had full-hearted expressions on their faces. Then, as HARUNA announced a precious song to them that is a must-play for performances at Osaka-Jo Hall, they began to play "one piece." Their dream of playing Osaka-Jo Hall came true with their first performance there in 2013 where they had also sung this song. They delivered this song with the thought of making a new promise with fans, with the lyrics, "I want to see you again ten years from now amid this scenery I've never seen before." After singing this last song while countless bubbles shined and glittered in the light, the four members gallantly exited the stage.
When the applause for the encore echoed in the arena, the LED screen announced the release of their new single one more time on September 29th. The quartet appeared on stage wearing remade t-shirts from their merch line-up and immediately performed the song for the first time. "one more time," which includes the idea of having fun when watching your favorite artist or listening to your favorite song, has a light sound and pleasant guitar strumming, and featured HARUNA singing expressively with a handheld mic.
The last song of their third performance at Osaka-Jo Hall was "Masterpiece," their re-debut song that was the first release from their imprint label "her." With a powerful band sound, HARUNA comfortably sang, "I'm flying around the world and singing to you," as silver streamers with the messages from the band were launched into the audience. After singing all of their prepared songs and taking a commemorative photo with their backs to the audience, they smiled and said, before taking their exit, "Thank you so much for the best night ever. Let's make sure to meet again! This has been SCANDAL!"

Haruna's "Shake it up baby!", already iconic
i love the video, is just the SCANDAL members having fun but is very colorful and relaxing
i forgot where it was stated (i think it was Rina) but they say that "One more time", "Ivory" and "Eternal" are part of a trilogy
lyrics
Dawn has broken on the long night
The sunlight streaming in is so gentle
I rubbed my sleepy eyes and said
"There's nothing to worry about - Nothing at all"
Chilled glasses - Two to mix
Let me hear only exciting sounds - Hey! Siri
Overlapping claps, a bouncy rhythm
It feels kind of nice
Let's head to an even more fun place
Than like back then
You shine when I laugh
Our love's in synchronicity
Let's tap our shoes and hit the town
uh uh uh... Shake it up, baby
Let's lose track of time and get into a rhythm
baby, one more time
baby, one more time
You don't need any special pass
uh uh uh... Shake it up, baby
Let's leave everything behind and keep on dancing
baby, one more time
baby, one more time
Even on foggy days
The scope spreads endlessly
Maybe that's fine
"There's nothing to worry about - Nothing at all"
A small secret, melting ice cream
Singing the way we want to - It's heavenly
Fluttering lyrics, falling drops of water
Let's go roughly
So that we can change forever and ever
Like it! Put a mark on the present time
This new era in which we live
Is a breezy city
Let's tap our shoes and hit the town

SCANDAL|A positive dance tune filled with hope, along with what's beyond their 15th anniversary
SCANDAL has released one more time, their third single released this year.
August 21st was the band's 15th anniversary, as well as the day their solo concert was held at Osaka-Jo Hall. During that concert they unveiled the song "one more time" for the first time. This dance number with positive and happy lyrics rides on a light sound with impressive guitar cutting, and fills the listener's heart with light while vividly conveying the band's current mood.
In this interview with all of the band members, we asked them to talk about their current feelings after celebrating their 15th anniversary, what they felt during their performance at Osaka-Jo Hall, stories about the production of "one more time," and their joint band tour that will be held in October.
Celebrating their 15th anniversary at Osaka-Jo Hall
──SCANDAL, you celebrated your 15th anniversary on August 21st of this year. Congratulations!
HARUNA: Thank you very much. What I'm most happy about is that the four of us have spent this not-so-short time of 15 years together, and that we've been able to keep up our activities.
RINA: We formed with these members who met at the dance school, went out into the world without knowing what being a band was about, and gradually created our own style. I feel that we're once again on top of that story.
MAMI: Yeah. 15 years of experience has greatly influenced who we now, and we're also very happy that we're able to properly affirm that. After accepting everything that's happened so far, we're able to say that we're in top form right now. That's what our 15th anniversary turned out to be.
TOMOMI: The band members, of course, as well as our staff are all in top form right now. Also, getting to meet all of our passionate fans who support us is one of the biggest treasures we've gotten in the past 15 years.
──Your anniversary concert, "SCANDAL 15th ANNIVERSARY LIVE『INVITATION』," was held at Osaka-Jo Hall and live streamed to 53 countries worldwide.
HARUNA: It truly is reassuring to have people around the world who support us. The four of us have progressed as a band, but for this concert it felt like our power was bigger than the four of us.
MAMI: At any rate, it was such a fun concert.
RINA: Yeah. It was so much funー!
HARUNA: Although we've played concerts at Osaka-Jo Hall twice before (#1 - 2013.03; #2 - 2014.06), this is the one we've been most satisfied with. We didn't feel any pressure in playing a concert at such an important place for us—we enjoyed performing naturally with the desire to give back to our fans and staff who have been with us these past 15 years. We were really happy to have a tremendous sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at this precious place to us.
TOMOMI: Since this was held during the pandemic, I'm sure that those who came out to the venue felt all kinds of emotions. But they thanked us for holding the concert. We're like, "No, no, we're the ones who should be doing the thanking" (laughs). We felt nothing but gratitude during this concert.
──There was one more thing to celebrate since it was RINA's birthday on that same day.
RINA: My birthday being on the same day really is a coincidence. Looking back, me being invited to join the band in the summer of when I was 14 and thinking, "All right, I'll try being in a band with these three" was just because it was my 15th birthday. I still think 15 years later that the choice I made then was correct. It made me very happy getting to celebrate together with everyone the milestone of turning 30.
The selection of songs showed the future rather than looking back
──During the concert you announced the final results of your "VOTE YOUR BEST SONG" song popularity poll that started in the spring.
MAMI: We understand the rankings from 1st to 3rd place, but from 4th place onwards the results were rather surprising. We showed the poll's progress during our tour in April, and there were a lot of songs that made us go, "This song went from that rank to this rank!?" I don't think anyone could have predicted this ranking. It was a very interesting project.
──While reflecting the voting results and drawing the path of your 15 years, your setlist on that day gave off the impression that it was making you clearly feel the current SCANDAL and the SCANDAL that is to come from here on out.
HARUNA: That's right. Rather than looking back on our 15 years, we thought of it as showing who we will be from here on out to those who became fans during these 15 years. Since we were able to reminisce when we hit our 10th anniversary, on this day we chose songs that were suitable for what we want to show going forward.
──The setlist also included two new songs. One song is "one more time," the song that you'll be releasing. The other song is one called "Ao no Naru Yoru no Sukima de" (In the Gaps of the Ringing Blue Night).
RINA: HARU touched on this briefly during the MC before "Ao no Naru Yoru no Sukima de" that all kinds of thoughts were mixed together and many things were lost during the lockdowns last year. We've also lost friends. In that sense it wasn't all good things, but there were also many things that we realized due to it all. I wanted to leave behind those feelings I will never forget in the form of a song, I we wrote the lyrics and music impulsively.
──When you hear that song, the faces of your loved ones come to mind. That's the sort of power this song holds.
RINA: I hope it'll be a song that you can listen to while thinking of those who are important to you. When I wrote the song I didn't think we'd be performing it at Osaka-Jo Hall, but I think it was very meaningful getting to perform it on that day. I was very happy that HARUNA did an MC that captures the thoughts I put into the song.
A "bright, dancy song" that affirms happy feelings
──This song "one more time" that you'll be releasing, the moment I heard it live it made me feel ridiculously happy. In your "Ivory" interviews that were posted in June, MAMI said that you wanted to make bright and happy songs going forward—this song is exactly that.
──The lyrics were written by RINA. I thought starting it with "Dawn has broken on the long night" was great. The pandemic's still ongoing, but I think it's also important for everyone to be positive and optimistic.
RINA: Although it's still a difficult situation for everyone, I don't think it's necessary to put a stopper on what you like and what you think is fun. It's okay to affirm feeling cheerful and happy. When I thought about it like that, I was able to decide to personally enjoy music once again to the fullest. I wrote the lyrics feeling like, "I'm going to enjoy being in a band to the fullest."
──That's why it's called "one more time."
RINA: Yes. Since the four of us originally wanted to write a song with the title "one more time," this time the title came first. In that sense, I think the lyrics also contain shared feelings between the four of us.
Remember it as "the song that goes 'Shake it up, baby'"
──There's a phrase in the lyrics that go, "Shake it up, baby." When I heard it live, I thought, "Wow, SCANDAL's saying 'Shake it up, baby'!" and got really excited (laughs).
HARUNA: Ahahaha.
MAMI: From the time I began writing the music, the only words that came to mind that could fit that melody was "Shake it up, baby" (laughs). The lines "one more time" and "Shake it up, baby" were already included in the song from the demo stage.
RINA: So, I used that line in the lyrics, but when I cooled my thoughts, I was like, "Isn't this too corny?"...(laughs). The four of us discussed it during pre-production and found that since the hook felt super good, we thought that that feeling should be cherished in this song and decided to leave it as is.
MAMI: We wanted to make it a catchy part of the song. It'd make us happy if you remember it as "the song that goes 'Shake it up, baby'." Up until now we've been attaching huge significance to each and every word of our lyrics, so we hadn't ever decided on lyrics based solely on feeling or the mood of a song. But, we wanted to finish at least that much with this song. That's why I pushed hard for "Shake it up, baby" to make it in (laughs).
──The arrangement was done by SCANDAL as well as Yuta Hashimoto, formely of group Odoriba Soul .
TOMOMI: The vice president of our managing office (Fumihiko Tsuchiya) was the main vocalist for Odoriba Soul, so we asked for a favor via that connection.
MAMI: We decided to keep the performance of this song modest, with a focus on computer music. Hasshi (Hashimoto) also works with other artists who belong to our office, such as Rinne and asmi, so this was our first shot at working with him. Since we had been saying that we like him quite a lot, he might have thought we were annoying (laughs). However, he was willing to accept everything.
TOMOMI: Specifically, it took a lot of time to decide on the sound in the intro. The phrases had been decided, but we took time to decide on a specific tone with Hasshi—we were like, "It's not this, it's not that."
RINA: Hasshi also came to the recording studio and we had fun recording.
TOMOMI: Yeah. I'm glad we got to thoroughly go over even the finest details together.
──The sound of the rhythm section is very effective this time, isn't it? That's why it's a song that you can dance to.
TOMOMI: That's right. Since the rhythm is important in this song, we took time to create the rhythm section's sound. As a result of focusing on making it dancy, we also tried to distort the sound a bit.
RINA: As for the drums, I was very particular about the hardness of the bass drum and snare, and how much they were tightened. During the part where the electronic drumming and actual drums overlap, I tried a lot of patterns for inserting and removing sounds, and it was a lot of fun getting to make it while experimenting all sorts of things at the recording studio.
Being aware of the lyrics, the delicate breathing techniques were borrowed from K-Pop
──Guitar cutting is also a big factor, isn't it? It feels great to listen to.
MAMI: I used the phrases as is from the demo stage. I wanted to create a kind of loop, so I'm basically playing the same thing the whole time (laughs).
──The interlude is really cool, but was that also solidified during the demo stage?
MAMI: I was unsure of what to do for the interlude. Even though all of the other parts were done, I felt like I was thinking about the interlude until the end. Aside from the guitar, I made all of the other parts via computer music, which gave me a very quiet impression. However, since I wanted the interlude to be for just the band, it turned out really good when we all tried recording it live.
──Also, HARUNA's vocals match the vibe of the song—it has higher saturation and brightness than usual.
HARUNA: At first, even though I was trying to make a fun song that people could dance to, I was thinking about making the vocals calm and suit my age. There was also a pattern in the demos that I sang a little more restrained than I do on the recorded track. But before I did actual recording, I asked RINA once more what feelings she put into the lyrics, and the line "You don't need any special pass" in the chorus really stuck out to me. It made me think of how age doesn't matter for enjoying music. So, I decided to purely express my feelings of having fun playing music.
──I'm sure that feeling would naturally come forth in your voice without you being aware of it.
HARUNA: Oh, yeah. My feelings for this song came out in it even without thinking too hard. Speaking of being aware of something, for me that was breathing. In K-Pop, breathing techniques are quite delicate. I used K-Pop songs as reference and sang while placing more importance on breathing.
──What was it like singing "Shake it up, baby"?
HARUNA: Ahahaha. From the demo stage, the one who was most concerned about using this phrase was me. As a singer (laughs). But when I actually sing it, it feels really good. The pleasant feeling you get when you suddenly get hooked on the rhythm is incredible.
──I think it really is an awesome song. However, when I listen to it on my iPhone, I have a problem with the lyrics "Hey! Siri!" making Siri activate for real (laughs).
TOMOMI: That's right. It reacts really well to that (laughs).
HARUNA: It'd be great if it went viral as a song that activates Siri (laughs).
RINA: Ahahaha. That could totally happen (laughs).
Enjoying the vibe because it was directed by the members
──The B-side song is a "party version" of "one more time," performed as an acoustic set. The vibe on this is also very nice.
MAMI: We had been wanting to make an acoustic arrangement of a dance tune. It's usually not easy to do hard cutting with an acoustic guitar. The recording of the song was pretty stoic despite it being called a "party version." Being like, "Is this actually a party?" is kind of like training in a dojo (laughs).
TOMOMI: Training's crazy (laughs). But it was fun.
RINA: Yeah. We had smiles on our faces that whole day. After the basics were recorded, we went to buy party poppers as well as recorded background noise to up the party feeling. It was so much fun getting loud and making it together.
HARUNA: I'm also glad that the direction of these two songs were entirely done by us. I think the songs have a nice atmosphere to them because we decided everything ourselves.
RINA: Yeah. If we do it ourselves, the direction will be very nuanced. We were able to properly share the vibe and mood together, so everything went very smoothly. It felt like we were moving towards the same spot more than usual. It may be because we've been together for 15 years that we were able to take on new challenges like this.
Wait a little longer for their 10th album
──In October you will be holding a joint band tour with the four artists CHAI, indigo la End, Chiaki Sato, and Vaundy.
HARUNA: We haven't interacted with them that much in the past, but we've selected people who we like and frequently listen to to be our joint band tourmates. I think they'll be exciting performances not only for us but also for those coming to watch.
RINA: This will basically be the first time we're meeting Vaundy and indigo la End.
MAMI: I appeared on a TV program the other day with Enon Kawatani [from indigo la End] for the first time, but I was shy and could barely speak to him (laughs). So, I hope that we can become friends via our concert with them.
──Lastly, please tell us about the progress of your highly anticipated new album. I'm sure everyone is looking forward to it.
RINA: We're making progress bit by bit (laughs). We need to write about three more songs.
TOMOMI: We haven't seen the whole picture yet, but I'm sure it'll be good. As our next album will be our 10th one, we are doing our best with the intention of absolutely making it good. Please wait a little longer.
──I'm also looking forward to SCANDAL in your 16th year.
TOMOMI: Yes (laughs). We'll continue to do activities that we feel comfortable with, and the four of us will go as far as we can go.

Mami = Deceiving spirit
•In that same sort of vein, HARU brings up the fact that MAMI's name written in Japanese uses hiragana rather than kanji. MAMI says that it's the same for TOMO as well. She also says that it's kind of fun to see what kind of kanji people think her name consists of. Some ways she's seen it is with the character "魔" (devil/demon) and "魅" (bewitch), which together is the actual word "魔魅" = "Deceiving spirit." HARU laughs and says, "That's so strong!" MAMI says that she's glad her hiragana name is more rounded and that it doesn't consist of characters that have a lot of strokes to them.
Large-scale project "SCANDAL Apollo program " of their dreams begins!?
HARUNA: We're announcing a large-scale project of our dreams...!
RINA: Right now...?
HARUNA: This is a sudden announcement...
As of today we're launching a large-scale project of our dreams...
Titled "SCANDAL Apollo program!"
RINA: ...what in the world?
MAMI: Sounds fun!
HARUNA: That's right - Catch up and SCANDAL are all about Apollo, and Apollo is all about space. So the next thing for us after Osaka-Jo Hall can only be space!
RINA: No... The next thing after OJH isn't space.
MAMI: But we'd like to aim for space/the stars.
HARUNA: It certainly is a large jump from OJH to space. At any rate, it means "SCANDAL will shoot for the stars!"
RINA: How will we be doing so?
HARUNA: It seems that this was established following the subject of penguins being aliens that TOMOMI talked about. Also, "This is the era in which Jeff Bezos actually went to space! It's not a dream!"
MAMI: It's getting funー
HARUNA: "SCANDAL has fans around the world - The next thing after that can only be aliens!"
MAMI: There might already be aliens among our fans, right?
TOMOMI: I think aliens are already listening to us, right?
MAMI: It's also possible that there are aliens among us right here.
Rina's original surname isn't Suzuki, she also dislikes the surname and rather be called SCANDAL Rina / Rina from SCANDAL
RINA talks about something that she was reminded of. When she was in middle school, her parents divorced and she had to change her last name. She didn't like her new last name nor the new environment she was in, but one of the rules for the school she was going to was to have students have a name tag sewn on to their clothes. Although she hated it, that was one of the rules she had to abide by. When students graduate from the school, their entire name is called when being handed their diploma at the graduation ceremony. She had told her homeroom teacher many times about how she felt about her name, but the teacher always said although she understood, they had to announce a student's full name. However, when the ceremony rolled around, the teacher called RINA by her first name only. RINA was shocked and started crying tears of happiness. She says that rules are important but you should also take into account each person's feelings. She thinks that if a teacher is understanding of the situation, it's okay to break/bend the rules for that person.
•She also mentions how fans overseas often write her full name including the kanji characters used, likely because the use of kanji can seem cool to foreigners. However, she doesn't really like it when her full name is used--she'd much rather be called "SCANDAL RINA" or "Drummer RINA" instead.

"MAKE A WISH DAISY PROJECT" Support for women survivors of domestic violence
Simple pajamas with white piping accents on chocolate-colored satin. There is a modest message on the back of the neck: "Proceeds will be donated to organizations that support women in need and those living in family environments."
Requesting assistance via crowdfunding in return for pajamas
Last year, RINA and her friend+model Seina started "MAKE A WISH DAISY PROJECT." The first thing they worked on was the production of these pajamas.
"There are of course cases when you need to communicate this subject in a serious manner. But for us, we wanted this to be a non-serious entryway into it, to incorporate it into your daily life and be fashionable. Also, to make it something that reminds you of the support you're giving."
In return for pajamas and requesting support via crowdfunding, over 7 million yen (~$62,000 USD) was collected in a month and a half starting from last December.
After deducting the cost of materials, they donated about 1.29 million yen (~$11,300 USD) in August of this year to two organizations that support women survivors of domestic violence, single mothers, fathers, etc. Since then, they have been selling original T-shirts and other items on their online store.
RINA met Seina via a vintage fashion store she used to frequent. They hit it off, sharing an interest in clothing as well as many other similarities.
They met up once a week, chatting at cafes and going shopping, and learned that they were both troubled by their family situation.
"I wish I could do something for those who are in the same situation as me."
During the time they were frequently discussing those thoughts, the pandemic hit.
"We were ordered to stay home, but I thought of how being at home wasn't safe for everyone.
There's a different danger aside from the virus.
This made me realize that if we continued to live our lives normally, I would have never thought of that," said RINA, looking back on last spring. Seina also thought the same.
The two of them agreed that if they were to do something, now would be the time.
Struggling alone as a child, thinking, "Why is my family the only one all jumbled up?"
RINA was raised as the eldest daughter of five siblings in a single-mother family. Her mother remarried, but her relationship with the other man hurt her mentally.
It was tough seeing her mother like that. "How can I protect her? I want to make my mother happy," is what she always thought. At the age of 15 she started her dream of working in music.
However, when she was working, phone calls from her mother would shake her up—it was all she could do to keep her composure.
Naturally, her mother was unable to attend live performances.
In her second year of high school, her dream of making a major debut came true and she moved to Tokyo. As her siblings bawled, she felt guilty that "I was the only one who got away."
Strengthening her resolve, she told herself, "I'll make sure to succeed and give back to my family," and has continued to support her family financially.
Smiling gently, she said, "Of course this is a job that I want, and I like being in a band—it's so much fun.
But I think I've been able to make it this far without stopping because I had my family [to worry about]."
"I kept wondering why my family was the only one that's all jumbled up." - She recalled her childhood as she struggled alone without being able to talk to anyone about it.
"I wonder how much it could have helped me if back then my favorite musician told me that there are families like mine."
She was also conflicted to share things that weren't related to music.
However, now that fans can feel closer to artists via social media, she felt that she might be able to get closer to the fans.
Additionally, another reason was that her relationship with the band's fans changed close to her late 20s.
SCANDAL launched its own imprint label within its record company [Victor Entertainment] three years ago.
They began promoting more independent activities.
"We can now tell our fans what we're worried about. We're able to make music as human beings, while also showing negative aspects. I feel that our fans are also speaking to us as fellow human beings." Feeling this warm support, she thought she'd be able to launch this project now. She puts all of her strength into it: "I've received fan letters that say things like, 'I'm actually in the same boat.' I've also come into contact with people who are learning about this kind of topic for the first time. It really feels like things are being conveyed."
"Because I have my three other band members...being a solo act would have been absolutely impossible for me"
SCANDAL played at a live music club in Odaiba, Tokyo on the third of this month. They performed cool and cute songs one after another, such as danceable songs and songs with strong rock themes to them. RINA could be seen surrounded by the members, hitting the drums powerfully.
It's been 15 years since the band formed. Her three bandmates understood her situation and gently supported her.
They also support this current project from the bottom of their hearts.
A cozy place can be found right here.
"Being with these three always makes me excited and happy. We're good matches for each other as human beings.
I've made it these past 15 years because I've got these three. Being a solo act would have been absolutely impossible for me."
Her family situation had always been a complex for her, but recently she's been able to gradually start accepting it. There are thoughts and problems she is able to notice due to having experience in that area. The amount of support still isn't that big yet, but she feels that the responses are moving forward. "I'm sure there are people who are suffering and wondering if their current situation will keep continuing. I want to continue doing this for a long time so that these people know they're not alone."
"Live the way you want to, without denying anyone"
We asked RINA about her personal tastes.
The appeal of drums
The way your feelings will come out in the sound. If you're in a bad mood, you won't be producing any fun sounds. I started doing it and found out that it suits me.
Words she cherishes
"Live the way you want to, without denying anyone." I've always cherished this in my musical activities. It's the feeling that the four of us feel comfortable doing what we like.
How she refreshes herself
Watching thrilling, slightly scary movies or anime. I like the fear of something feeling bizarre and mysterious.
Favorite fashion items
Incorporating vintage items. Most of them are from Europe. A lot of my interior items are antiques purchased at flea markets.

the members of SCANDAL were each tasked with making a presentation about different topics
Haruna: Manholes
Mami: Punch perms
Tomomi: Kokeshi Dolls
Rina: Ladybugs
HARUNA: Today's the day to present "ONE MORE TIME…STUDY!" All of us are a bit excited.
TOMOMI: I've already fallen in love with what I studied. I might be nervous about conveying their charm.
HARUNA: I see. For this project, the four of us are turning in homework. It's a very, very, very late-summer independent research project, that it's basically a winter independent research project now. The four of us each studied a given topic. Let's present our findings and go over the topics:
My (HARUNA) topic is manholes. TOMOMI's is kokeshi dolls. MAMI's is punch perms. RINA's is ladybugs. We'll decide on the order by jan-ken-pon.
All: (*Doing jan-ken*)
HARUNA: So we'll be starting from MAMI!
RINA: If you would.
HARUNA: Present it however you'd like.
MAMI: Now then, guitarist MAMI will be presenting her research on punch perms.
HARUNA: I'm really interested in this topic...
MAMI: Really? That makes me happy to hear!
TOMOMI: We're interested, so please continue.
MAMI: Okay.
As you may know, punch perms originated in the 1970s in Japan and became popular in the 80s. At the time, models were given punch perms at haircut shows--it was a fashionable style. However, in the Heisei Era, due to its "scary" and "tough-guy" image, and is now a hairstyle that you hardly see these days.
All: I see.
MAMI: A punch perm is a permed hairstyle with small curls. In contrast to perms for women that give loose curls, this tight-curled perm is aimed towards men with short hair. It's similar to an afro perm but different in length. It was once popular with athletes such as pro baseball players, boxers, and golfers because sweat doesn't affect it and it's convenient to wash.
All: Ohー
MAMI: The punch perm is said to have been invented by a barber in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka in the 1970s. A hair iron heated to 160°C/320°F is applied to the hair and permed by turning one's wrists. If a person has a lot of hair, it can be wrapped about 600 times... Apparently, because there isn't anything else that goes higher than that + press it, it was named "champion press" at first.
All: Ahー
MAMI: After that, it was named after the magazine "Heibon Punch" that was popular at the time, and it came to be known as a "punch perm" among barbers in the Kansai area.
All: Is that soー?
Mami did what any other sensible person would do for research: copy-paste the Wikipedia article
•MAMI continues with her presentation [she's actually reading the Wikipedia entry about it word for word lol].
One fact she reads is that since hairdressers' sales in the 1970s were sluggish due to the trend of people having long hair, the group "Zenkoku Riyou Seikatsu Kankyou Eisei Dougyou Kumiai Rengou-kai" (全国理容生活環境衛生同業組合連合会; it's basically a union consisting of barbers and the like - HARU goes, "That's so long!"), AKA "Zenriren," formed an emergency project team and set out to develop highly fashionable short hairstyles--the punch perm was one of those. MAMI then talks about how punch perms have evolved and in Gifu Prefecture, barbers are now doing it so that the sides are shaved and only the hair at the top of the head is permed [like this ]. This new style is called "New Punch." TOMO asks if that's what's in fashion now for these perms. MAMI says that it's one type of punch perm.
•MAMI also says that there are also different types of punch perms known as "Nure Pan (濡れパン; "nure" = wet)" and "Yuru Pan (緩パン; "yuru" = loose)". "Nure Pan" is a perm that makes it look like your hair is wet. After perming it, the hair is combed through with a comb with dipped in gel or grease. "Yuru Pan" is a perm that gives you much more natural curls than the "Nure Pan" and also gives your hair volume. TOMO says it basically isn't a punch perm anymore. MAMI agrees and says that she's seen pictures of it and that it's so different looking from a typical punch perm that you wouldn't know it was associated with them. She also says that punch perms are a barber technique rather than a hairdresser's one. But since the numbers of barbers are decreasing every year, it's getting harder to find ones who still know how to do the original one/keep the techniques going. She concludes it by saying she's looking forward to how punch perms will evolve in the future.
•RINA says that punch perms have quite the history to them. MAMI says that there are many techniques like this that many people are sure to want to try and pass down/keep alive. RINA says that there are a lot of fields like that. TOMO says that for a time she really liked watching videos related to punch perms. They talk about how doing stuff like that takes a lot of skill. MAMI says that a detailed hairstyle like this is unique to Japan, and that it's a hairstyle that can be done because delicate work is done carefully. She says that if they were to go out on the streets, they'd probably guys walking around with these newer perm styles and might not know the name or them, or where they originated from. The others agree that these styles do not resemble OG punch perms at all. MAMI says that listeners should look up pictures of punch perms afterwards. The band and staff clap for her. MAMI goes, "Was that okay??" HARU says that was plenty. RINA says that the research done traced back the topic's history quite a bit. TOMO and HARU say it was interesting.

Words: RINA - Music: MAMI
we know they are going to release 2 MVs, at the very least "MIRROR" is definitely getting one
episode #12! it was filmed during the recording of their album MIRROR
every member of SCANDAL is going to have the lead vocal in at least 1 song! the last time that happened was in 2014 with "Hello World" (one of my favorite SCANDAL releases ever) they haven't announced which song are each member going to sing but we got some clues in the episode
Rina's song is going to be Kanojo wa Wave (彼女はWave; She Is a Wave), they were talking about that the start of the episode
Tomomi's song seems to be Ai no Shoutai (愛の正体; Love's True Colors)
is not clear if Mami is going to get another song since she already got Ivory which is going to be also included in the album
i feel that Haruna's song is going to be Yuugure, Tokeru (夕暮れ、溶ける; Dusk Melts), Rina's is #4, Tomomi's is potentially #5, Ivory is #6 so #7 being her would make sense
